Identify the sizing system

Before selecting a number, check whether the listing uses EU, UK or US sizing and whether its chart is for men or women. Do not assume the same number means the same thing across listings. Follow the brand’s measurement instructions and use its chart for the model you are considering. If the listing and chart conflict, ask the retailer to clarify instead of guessing a conversion.

Keep a useful reference

Note the model and labelled size of a pair you already find comfortable. Treat this as a reference, not a universal conversion rule. Look for model-specific information about width and fit. Buyer comments can suggest questions to ask, but a comment such as ‘true to size’ does not establish which size will fit you. Avoid a listing that leaves the model or sizing system unidentified.

Check the return route first

Find the return deadline, item-condition requirements and any exclusions for sale items. Check whether you can get a refund or only an exchange, and who pays return shipping. After delivery, inspect the size label and try the shoes indoors under the retailer’s stated conditions; keep the box and tags until you decide. If the fit is wrong, use the return process rather than keeping an unsuitable pair because it was discounted.
